Ingredients:
1 cup dried green peas soaked overnight in water;
1/2 cup chopped tomatoes;
1 cup chopped onion;
green chillies according to taste;
few curry leaves;
2 tbsp thick coconut milk (optional);
1/2 tsp mustard seeds;
1/2 tsp fennel seeds;
1/2 tsp turmeric powder;
1/2 tsp chilli powder;
1 1/2 tbsp coriander powder;
1/2 tsp pepper powder;
salt to taste;
2 to 3 tsp oil.
In a pressure pan add the soaked dried green peas,2 1/2 cups of water and pressure cook for 6 to 7 whistles.
Open cover once the pressure is released. In a pan add oil and when hot add mustard seeds.
when mustard seed starts to crackle add fennel seeds,curry leaves and saute for a second.
Add onions and stir until they slightly change color( about 3-4 minutes).
Add green chillies,ginger-garlic paste and saute for another 2 minutes.
Add the tomatoes and cook till they are well mashed.
Once the tomatoes are cooked add turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder, pepper powder,and salt.
Saute for about 4-5 minutes or until the raw smell of the spices goes away and oil starts to release from the sides.
Add the cooked green peas along with its water and mix well. Increase the flame to high and bring the curry to a boil.
Add the coconut milk( adding coconut milk is optional, curry taste equally delicious without the coconut milk). If the curry is too thick, add 1/2 cup of hot water.
Finally sprinkle few more curry leaves. Delicious and healthy dried green peas curry is ready to serve. Enjoy this with chapathis, appams or rice!
